The material used for wall tile panelling is so different: from ceramic and porcelain to metal wall tiles.
The newest additions are cork and glass wall tiles as eco-friendly choices for building materials.
Because of their colors, pattern and texture, tiles cut from natural stone have a rich look that can be rarely achieved by manufactured products.

  • Marble is a limestone that was subject of high pressure underneath the earth's surface, resulting in a hard structure with pronounced veins. Its colours range from almost white to almost black. For thousands of years marble was considered a sign of elegance and opulence.
Some marble is soft and absorbent, while some forms are hard and vitreous. While it's an excellent choice for wall tile panelling, it can be installed on floors or horizontal surfaces too, but in areas where there isn't much wear. Reason? Marble can be easily scratched and stained, so avoid installing it on countertops.
  • Granite is part of earth's crust, and it has in its composition different minerals, so you can find a full spectrum of colors, from black to light with speckles.
because it is exceptionally durable, harder and stronger than marble, it is considered a versatile tiling material, suitable for the whole range of applications, including wall tiles.
  • Travertine consists of layers of calcium carbonate formed by underground deposits near springs. It has a brown color with veins, and a pitted surface. It's quarried in France and few other places on the globe; that makes it rare and expensive.
  • Ceramic Tile is still the most common material used for wall tile paneling. At a basic level, ceramic tiles can be glazed and unglazed. A glaze is a transparent or coloured coating applied on the face od ceramic tiles. The unglazed ones have the colour running through he body of the tile. Glazing a ceramic tile allows surface colour and design to be added, so it becomes more durable, preventing staining and water absorption.
  • Porcelain Tile is the modern version of ceramic tile. Made of clay and fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, its density is greater. Being fine grained and smooth, it's proned to take on less moisture and more resistant to staining than ceramic tile. Porcelain tiles are available in mat, unglazed or a high polished finish.

Colours range from brown to red and yellow, depending on the minerals from the clay. For large quantities, they are manufactured by machine, tiles resulted being regular in shape. They are not slippery, and can be laid in the same way as standard tiles.
If you decide to use unglazed ones for your wall decor, make sure they get sealed if used in wet areas.
  • Quarry Tiles are made from clay extruded through a dye, so they will look similar with a cut stone. With a rough surface, they add texture to the walls, and as a plus they are slip-resistant. bacuse they are absorbent, they should get sealed to increase their durability, and prevent mildew and possible stains.
  • There are three other type of tiles: cement body tiles, pavers and brick veneer - but they are often made specifically for outdoor use.
