You can make the most of your wall design by using wall borders. They represent a great way of unifying contrasting design schemes altogether.

Available in a wide aray of designs, they can be used either alone as wall accents or with one or two coordinating wallpapers.

Manufacturers made available patterns that emulate architectural details, stenciling, or borders designed to look alike fringes, tassels or even swags of fabric.

Used on painted walls or with matching wallpapers, wall borders can lend a sense of architecture to a cramped room, hide eventual structural defects and accentuate positive feature.

They are an effective, easy to apply and economical way of decorating.

Basic Steps to Hang Wall Paper Borders

Preparation: all surfaces to be decorated should be clean and sound. Allow freshly painted surfaces to cure for 72 hours. Newly applied wallcovering surface must be dry. Ensure all rols of border have the same batch number.

Step 1
First decide what is the position you'd like for the border. Draw light pencil guidelines for the whole room. To be accurate with your markings, use a steel ruler or a spirit level. An alternate way of having a straight line is to use a carpenter's level.
If you decided to hang it at he top of the wall, just use the edge of the ceiling as a guide.

Step 2
Because borders usually come in lenghts of 5 yards or more, go for a straight run across the a wall, and try to overlap seams at corners. Cut lengths to match the dimensions but don't forget to allow about two inches at the ends for trimming.

Step 3
If your border needs pasting, mix the paste according to instructions that come with the border; fold accordion-style. Then positin one end of the border in the corner, use the gudelines you did( didn't you?) then unroll all along the wall. You can use a brush to put it in place.
If the border has self-adhesive, peel off a short length, fix it on the wall, and continue to peel a little bit at the time.

Step 4
Make sure you allow for a little overlap and cut the next strip. Stick the start of the second one over the end of the first border. To cut away the overlap, use a sharp knife. Remove the excess and open up the joint to get off excess from the first length. Use a seam roller to secure the joints.

Tips To Determine The Wall Paper Borders Placement

Useful steps to get the placement of wall borders:

  • Cut a long strip of border - about 3-4 feet long. Tape it to the wall in different locations. This should help you to visualize the perfect spot to hang it and try out different effects. Take into consideration the height of the room too.
    A border that is hanged at the top of the wall will draw attention to the ceiling.
    Being put at the picture level, can make a wall seem lower than actually is.
    If used at chair level, make sure it is hanged one third of the distance between the floor and ceiling.

  • Start hanging the wall paper borders from an inconspicuous area like a corner, or the hinge side of an entry door.
    Why? If there is a mismatch that will happen when the last strip meets the first one. If you run it alond the doors or windows you can use the overlapping technique for mittered corners.

  • You can hang the borders vertically to create stripes. This will make a low ceiling look higher, giving a sensation of spaciousness in a small room. The trick works the same for painted and papered walls, but make sure you coordinate patterns and colours.

  • If you want to draw attention to your beautiful floors, use the borders along the baseboards.

  • If you have a living room and a hallway, or a bathroom and a bedroom that are decorated differently, and you want to unify the design, you can use the same border pattern and color to link them together.

  • To make a room more intimate and visually lower the ceiling, when you paint the area above the picture rail border, use the same shade as the one used for the ceiling
