Types of Wallpaper

When choosing wallpaper, take into account where do you want to install them, the size of the room, your personal taste, and your level of skills if you consider installing them by yourself. Some of them are better suited to a beginner level than others.

Not only there are on the maket a consideeable number of colors designs, but you can notice different types of wallpaper too:

  • Lincrusta
    Traditionally they are used to decorate formal living spaces. Used more for friezes or in hallways, they are a heavy wallpaper.
    First they appeared sometimes in the 1800s, and they feature a raised design surface that mimic hard putty. Put on the wall using a special clay based paint, they can be finished with a clear glaze or can be painted.
    The Lincrusta wallpaper is shown in the left image at the top of the page.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: First soak the back of it with hot water until throughly soaked. Paste then hang as you would normally hang wallpaper. Use a sponge roller to rub down afterwards. Use a sharp craft knife for a straight edge cut. If you have any gaps at the external corners use decorator's filler.
    Skills level - Requiring a highly skill level, it should be left for professionals to handle; unless you're a very experienced diy-er, of course!
    One of the most suitable types of wallpaper for formal rooms, period homes, elegant living spaces.
  • Textured Wallpaper
    This wallpaper has a raised pattern and has a 3D effect. Can be used as is - for the whole wall or a featured one - or painted afterwards, either to create a new effect or to freshen up. Textured wall paper is shown in the right image at the top of the page.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: handle it with care when hanging because is kind of fragile.
    Skills level - It requires medium skill level.
    Suitable for rooms where it needs to hide wall imperfections; because it has a tactile appeal can be used to transform a flat, plain wall.

  • Flock Paper
    One of the most highly decorative types of wallpaper, this one has a velvet pile bonded onto its surface. This way it creates an eye catching effect.
    You can see a picture of it above left.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: handle it with care when hanging, so you won't allow any paste to stick on the surface of wallpaper. It's almost impossible to remove paste from flocking. One way to protect it is to protect the surface with a thin layer of lining paper.
    You can apply the paper with a felt roller or a clean brush.
    Skills level - Because of the pattern, it needs lots of attention to match strips of paper.It requires a high skill level.
    Suitable for traditional wall decor.
  • Toile De Jouy Wallpaper
    Highly decorative, this type of wallpaper looks more like engraving print. It is originated from France and it usually shows sceneries or figure motifs in shades of muted colours, with a plain background. This way it creates an eye catching effect.
    You can see a picture of it above right.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: needs to be extremely accurate when hanging because of the pattern. Don't won't allow any paste to stick on the surface of wallpaper. It's almost impossible to remove paste from flocking. One way to protect it is to protect the surface with a thin layer of lining paper.
    You can apply the paper with a felt roller or a clean brush.
    Skills level - Because of the pattern, for this type of wallpaper it is important that strips be carefully matched one with another.
    Suitable for both traditional or contemporary wall decor.
  • Metallic Wallpaper
    This kind is a paper with a metallic sheen on it, making it look like real metal on the wall. It is referred also as foil.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: needs to be handled with care when hanging. Suitable for a room that doesn't have surface imperfections. Also ideal to make a small room appear bigger.
    Skills level - It requires a medium skill level because it can show very easily any imperfections of the job.
    One of the most suitable types of wallpaper for any wall decor in small rooms or darker spaces.
  • Leather Paper
    This type of wallpaper first appeared in Italy in the 1700s, and then it was in fashion in England, during the Victorian period.Nowadays technology advanced so manufacturers have many colors available and the material is not real leather anymore, but the imitation is perfect.
    General guidelines on how to hang it: needs to be handled with care when hanging. Suitable for a room that doesn't have surface imperfections. Also ideal to make a small room appear bigger.
    Skills level - Not recommended for beginners.
    Suitable forany wall decor if you want to make a statement and add warmth.
