What Is Traditional Decorating Style?

Achieve A Traditional Look

Always in style, traditional decor remains popular because it acquires the best from the past.
Some of the major characteristics of this decorating style are: symmetry and proportion within a comfortable ambiance, a formal look and graceful shapes, and quiet order.
Traditional decor is usually compromised of warm finishes, floral accents and ornate frames.

Elements of Design in Traditional Wall Decor

  • The traditional-style color palette incorporates neutral or based on jewel tones colors. Most probably you will find lightest color on the walls and deeper hues for upholstery.
  • Pattern style on the walls - Naturalistic ones such as flowers, elaborate images of bowls of fruit, leaves and vines are used in these formal settings as well as the vertical tone-on-tone stripes.
  • Wall Treatment: Get your style with either wallpaper or paint combined with stencils(a fairly classic used stencil is "fleur-de-lis" ).
  • Create the mood - for this decor style use dark accent colors, rich fabrics and classically detailed upholstery patterns that draw attention.
  • Traditional homes look wonderful with deep baseboards and wide casings.
  • Fabrics are rich colored and luxurious with a soft feel. To get a classy look to your upholstered furniture use fabrics like silk, brocades, leather and velvet.

Accents For Traditional Decor:

  • Your first lighting choices in a traditional setting should be Crystal chandeliers.
Metal used should be bronze or pewter.
  • Framed art is a "must-have" of the traditional style. Consider a large landscape or a country scene.
Prints are hung symmetrically or balanced with paired accessories.
  • Most traditional-style furniture is made from solid warm woods such as walnut, rosewood or mahogany.
Lines are graceful and pleasant to the eye.
  • Layered window treatments are common for the traditional décor: sheer curtains, then jacquard drapes and a velvety valance, cornice or swag.
  • A traditional-style room is not cluttered, yet it appears to be full of furniture and accessories.
  • Carpets are an essential element of traditional style.
  • In a traditional kitchen, the countertop is concrete made.
  • Wooden flooring will always bring a traditional look to the entire house.
