but...
First, you need to do some planning, so read this "Space Planning Guide" to get some ideas on what style does represent you best, what do you want your focal points to be in each room, and where do you want them within the rooms, and last but not least, how to get more organized so you would enjoy a more freely space. We don't want to be sorry later, so...Let's start!
Space Planning Basics
There are some things you should consider before starting any work on the wall decor project:
Your home wall decor should reflect your own personality, interests, and taste. When we talk about personal style, it's everything from what's in your closets, to how you live, and entertain your friends or neighbours. You wanna know what is your style? These should help you find out:
What's in your closet? If you have a variety of designs for your clothes, and a lots of colors, most probably you would enjoy splashes of colors on your walls, too, and be more attracted to a contemporary wall decor, and also you would follow the trends.
If you have toned down colors for your clothes and almost the same cut and design, you'll be more inclined to a traditional style, maybe a monochromatic, more conservative decor. How's your personality? You're open and outgoing; then you're more likely to enjoy a bright color on your walls, a trendy metal wall sculpture, or a contemporary art painting.
On the other side, if you're a reserved and quiet person, your decorating style will show that, too: soft hues for the wall colors, and a more conservative decor.
Get inspiration from magazines
There are lots of decor magazines out there, with brilliant ideas for your wall decor. Pick the photos that match with your decorating style, but remember to keep focused on what you're looking, otherwise you might get lost with all those perfect, shiny looking pictures.
Still not decided? To make the decision easier for you, we put together, more information about decoration styles.
Tips on decorating:
- Decorate for yourself, not for the neighbors, MR.X., or Mrs.Y. Be happy who you are, and you will feel good in your home.
- Decorate and choose the style you want to display for your wall decor, with your "significant other". That might mean compromising between your two different styles, but, you both want to be happy in your house.
- Don't necessarily follow the trends of the day, if they don't appeal to you. Yep, that new color for the walls might be in fashion, but it wouldn't suit your personality, so you might not be happy having to face it every day.
Tight budget? Consider painting your walls for a quick update on your decor. What brand to pick?? It all depends: high quality at lower price, or maybe low VOC(volatile organic compounds).Check these Interior Paint Reviews to get a better idea on what works better for you!
Take a look at the dimensions of your room: ceilings to high?, hallways to narrow? rooms too small? Here there are a few tips on how to improve the overall appearance of your rooms' walls.
Rooms too small. - Use mirror panels; they will add more apparent space to a room.
- Use wall paint that has a gloss finish. it will reflect the light, and help with the illusion of a bigger space.
- Attach a garden trellis to your wall.Don't forget to use contrasting colors with the background.
- Use pale colors when painting your walls. dark colors will shrink the space, light ones will open it up.
- Buy fewer pieces of furniture at a larger size, than more smaller pieces that will make the space look cramped.
- Make use of the mini-prints, if you're inclined to use wallpaper. They look perfect in a small bathroom, or bedroom.
Ceilings too high - Use dark paint, with matt finish, so the ceiling will appear lower than actually is.
- Lower the height of the ceiling by adding paper borders or friezes
- Brale up the wall length by adding moulding at waist height, and painting the area below it witha darker color than the part that's above.
It doesn't matter how beautiful or modern your space is, if it's not organized, it won't be functional, so you will feel cramped and stressed. Being organized it's a big challenge for everyone. We seem to always have more furniture in our houses than we need, lots of stuff in our kitchens, or garages, or in the drawers in our bedrooms.
Before starting any traditional, contemporary, or eclectic wall decor, look around and estimate how functional your space is. Bring a first big box, and start filling it with things you want to put in the garbage, another one for things you want to donate, or maybe organize a garage sale, and a third one for things you really want to keep.
To help you with deciding the right box to use, try and ask yourself these questions: - When was the last time I used it?
- Do I have a better one instead?
- When it will be next time I will need it?
- Can I repair it?
Answering these questions will help you make the right decision.
Now, that your trial is done, you should plan a convenient storage system, however limited the space you might have. Consider what kind of storage would work best in that specific area - kitchen, bedroom, living room,or bathroom. it's good to plan it now, than have the frustration later, as each room has its own storage requirement.Think what you want to display, and what you wanna keep out of sight.
