Scandinavian Design
Scandinavian decor emerged as a style sometimes in the 1920s and peaked in popularity in the 1950s, with Carl Larsson - a twentieth century designer - being considered its parent.
Today is in style again, exploring with its lines the relaxed comfort, an unpretentious simplicity and easy, modern elegance.
Closeness to nature is a recurring theme in scandinavian design. Long and cold winters and bright summers with long warm summer nights put their label on the nordic interiors. Furniture is spare to bring more light inside, but organic shapes and materials are a characteristic of this style.
Main concept of scandinavian design is that aestetics and functional decor objects should be affordable to everybody not just the rich.

Elements of Design in Scandinavian Decor
- Wall Treatments: walls are painted in neutral colors; very light cream or slate grey and different shades of white will open up even the coldest days of winter, providing in the same time the background for the other design elements.
- Natural materials and furniture with clean lines and a geometrical form that could be easily mass produced were favoured.
- The style is airy and light, and all of these are reflected in the color of the walls, floors and window treatments.
- Fabrics mostly used are the natural ones, like cotton, linen, all coloured in pale shades of white, cream or blue.
- Favoured the most for furniture and floors are the pale woods like pine and birch.
- Keywords for the nordic style are: functionality, convenience and affordability. Style is not forgotten, giving an overall sense of harmony.

Accents for Scandinavian Style Decor
- Nordic homes have pale coloured walls, sometimes stenciled with simple flowers and in bright colors. A floral pattern can be chose as long as it is not busy and colors not very bright.Ceiling can be painted using trompe-l'oeil in contrasting colors.
- Lighting: is considered to be simple with wall sconces here and there and simple chandeliers with spare ornaments.
- Typical pictures include landscapes, animals, botanical prints, portraits, family photographs.
- Collection displaysare few and far in between. Clutter is not welcomed in a nordic decor. Choose vases in either blue or white colors, and fill them with fresh flowers.
Floral wreaths are welcomed and few mirrors will give the ilussion of more light.
- Flooring is composed mainly of natural materials, mostly light woods like birch or pine. Sometimes you can see washed wooden floors, or painted ones.
- If floor coverings are used again they will be created with natural materials like sisal, with emphasis being put on functionality.
- Furniture has simple lines with tapered legs. The same with flooring, it can be painted or stenciled.
- Curtains are made of eco-friendly materials: cotton, or unbleached linen.
