Inexpensive Crown Molding

"I'm happy I found the info I needed for inexpensive crown molding! T.L."

Buying a home is one of the most important and expensive things in life, and for the average new homeowner, it will often leave them with a tight budget for the renovations.

Changing floors, walls , ceilings and adding baseboards and crown molding means extra expenses to an already tight budget.

At least that's what happened in my case: we bought an old house, and with a small budget, the solution was to install ourselves the moldings we wanted.
I found out that the most inexpensive crown molding is the polyurethane one.

Polyurethane Molding - Advantages

They:

  1. are rot free, lightweight and also they are maintenance free (just wipe with a damp cloth!).
  2. are moisture resistant - an ideal choice for bathrooms and kitchens, laundry rooms.
  3. are straight and knot free for a consistent look.
  4. do not shrink or twist as a wood molding would do, thus with wider sizes are available.
  5. have a wider range of designs. That's because polyurethane( or urethane or polysterene) moldings are poured in a cast and the mold itself can replicate intricate carvings
  6. are sold at a fraction of the cost of the wood molding.
  7. are much easier to be installed than its wood counterpart.
  8. are lighter than the wood ones, hence easier to install. They use less nails if any. I found some types of crown moldings that use only adhesives or just adhesive tape!
  9. are primed and ready to be painted, so handling faux finishing is easy to do.

  • What Model and Width to Choose?

When choosing the model of the crown molding you want to coordinate them with the rest of the moldings you have in the room: casing, baseboards, chair railings and ceiling medallions. For example, if the baseboard has clean lines don't use for crown molding something that has intricate detailing on it.

Also the height of the room plays an important role. Usually for an 8 feet ceiling, people choose a 2"-3" wide crown molding. For a 9 feet ceiling you can go to a wider crown molding.

The width of the baseboard has to match pretty close the width of your crown molding. If your baseboard is 3" wide, avoid choosing a crown molding that's 6"-7" wide. It will make the whole room look disproportionate!

    Where Can You Buy Them?

If you decide to buy them in one of the typical warehouse chain stores, you can find them at Home Depot in Canada for a price staring at under $2/ft( not bad, right?). In States they can bought at Lowe's staring at around $2-3 /ft. Both stores have a limited selection, the profile I needed wasn't there, so I decided to see what's online..

    Buy Inexpensive Crown Molding On-line

    • www.crown-molding.com and www.profile-moldings.com seem to have good prices. A large assortment of casings, moldings, architectural profiles are available. Their prices start at around $1.6/ft for a 3" wide crown molding. Corners are sold for around $4, so you don't need to mitter.
    • I'm from Canada, so I looked for some inexpensive crown molding to be shipped to Vancouver. I found www.r-wholesale.com. They seem to be or use the same distributor as the previous two on-line stores, but again prices are good.
    • Another interesting website I found is www.wishihadthat.com. The crown molding profile I'm looking, is sold at $1.2-1.3/ft.
Outside and inside corners for the profile I looked were around $5/ each. Shipping is advertised as free for USA( not free for Canada D: ) for orders over $50. I decided to give them a try and I will let you know how it went.
    • I was looking also for an easy to install crown molding with no coping. I found a Canadian company: flipface.com. They have a reversible crown molding. I didn't try it personally, but they claim you need just one cut for your corners. They also say their innovative powerflip technology reduces installation time and minimizes waste.

One last thing: I don't work for any of the companies that sell or market molding. This page is just a result of the research I did, in need of inexpensive crown molding. It was also important to me to find some crown molding easy to install.
