Color Palettes

"Choose from these color palettes the ones that suit you best!"

Picking paint colors is considered part science, part art.
We started with the "science" part, when we looked at the color wheel chart in "Understand Color".

Now we will take a look at some of the "tried and verified" color combinations used in interior wall decor.
Some of the paint ideas you will see here, are part of the single color schemes, but will touch color palettes with up to three colors.

From the most traditional bedroom to the most contemporary one, you will find time-honored paint ideas that would work to adapt with your own look!

Color Palettes: RED

No other color carries more energy and vitality than a glorious red. For centuries it was a symbol of power and royalty.
Red is a warm color and brings excitement and passion to any interior.

Being a dominant and intense color, it can easily overpower all the other tones present in the room, so dose it carefully.

  • Paint the walls of an active room, such as a dining room, a vibrant red. Known for the fact that it influences appetite, red is a natural choice.
Add sophistication to the room by using light colored furniture and white accents for a vase or group of vases, white frames for your photographs, white trim at the door and windows.
  • In a kitchen with high ceilings and stainless steel appliances, use red to make it more inviting.
  • Create a stunning entrance in your home by using a deep red for the walls. The effect will be both elegant and welcoming.
  • Do you want a contemporary look to your living room? Paint it a bold red; add cream accessories and even black for sofas or armchairs, or wall artwork..

  • Color Schemes: YELLOW

No other color carries so much happiness than a sunny yellow. From the most formal room to a casual one, it brings the same energy.
Yellow is part of the warm colors and brings the sunshine glow to every room.

  • For a French country look paint your walls a shade of yellow-mustard.
  • A small powder room becomes glamorous, without being claustrofobic, if it's painted in a butter-yellow shade. Choose a paint with a semi-gloss finish for light reflection.
  • Complete the traditional look of a dining room by painting its walls in a pale tinit of yellow. This would bring the perfect backdrop for delicate prints or chinaware displays on the walls.
  • One of the classic color schemes, yellow has that good cheer that enlivens any kitchen or nursery.
  • In a room with western window exposure, painting the walls a sunny yellow, will help lift the spirits.

  • Color Schemes: GREEN

Made up of blue and yellow, green is so much used and popular, it's sometimes referred to as the "fourth primary" color.
While a blue-green is infused with the calming and cool influence of acean, the light yellow greens are bright and summery.
With all these shades, green still remains part of the cool-down colors.

  • In a traditional living room paint the walls a hunter green, and use white trims for contrast. Use the same shade of green for some accents, such as a lamp or pillows to complete the look.
  • A country style setting will benefit from the walls being painted in a clear green with a touch of yellow. It will add warmth to the room, and blend really well with the rusty red shades from the furniture.
  • A bright and warm honeydew green is the perfect backdrop for a modern setting of a living room. Use as accents light colored furniture with modern and metallic lines.
  • Use the lighter and darker tones of a mint green for a classic, subtle color palette that's simple to work with, and comfortable to live with, in your contemporary bathroom..

  • Classic Color Palettes: BLUE & WHITE

From the French cotton toile to the Chinese porcelaines, blue and white combination remains a classic, and takes us to the serenity of the sea and sky. Together, as a color scheme, they give the room a freshness and crispness, no other combination can have.

  • For a French country decor, you can have white walls and choose for upholstery, materials that have French toile printed. Mix some other shades of blue, or different patterns.
  • Living with just these two colors in a room, might be visual overloading. Bring some other colors as accents: a vase in a terracotta shade, or one or two lavender accent pillows.
  • Modern kitchen can have blue walls as the perfect backdrop for laminated white cabinets.
  • It is very well suited in a nautical theme for children's room.
  • In a room that gets too much sun, or a solarium, use this combination to cool down the warmth.
  • In a dining room, to increase the appetite, as they say it does, for the white or white-off walls, use a display of white and blue plates.

  • Classic Color Combinations: BLUE & WHITE & YELLOW

Being away one from another in the color wheel chart, yellow and blue confirm the rule that "opposites attract". All three, they are one of the prettiest color palettes.

  • For a sophisticated look in a living-room, choose yellow-creamy walls and window treatments, and for upholstery and accents use a dark blue and bright yellow.
  • To give your bedroom that restful look, choose for the walls a pale tint of blue, and accent it with white and pale yellow.
  • For the traditional decor, use for walls in the dining-room and entrance, a lemon yellow; they will be the perfect backdrop to display your favorite collection of decorative wall plates.
  • An elegant kitchen, in a traditional style, might have walls painted in a dark blue( with a slight grey in it), trims in a combination of pure white and pale blue. Use dark, rich wood finish for the cabinets, table and chairs.
